# Convert Toucan to Toucan2

### Preparation: Parts and Tools Needed

Before you begin, ensure you have all the necessary components from your upgrade kit, the required tools, and the components you will need to carry over from your Toucan1 keyboard.

**Lithium Battery Safety Cautions**

* Handle with Care: Never puncture, crush, or severely bend the lithium battery. Use caution when using sharp tools like tweezers near the battery casing.
* Inspect Before Use: If your existing battery appears swollen, dented, or is leaking, do not reinstall it. Safely dispose of it according to local e-waste regulations and replace it.
* Prevent Short Circuits: Ensure metallic tools do not bridge the battery's exposed terminals or connectors.
* Heat Warning: Keep the battery away from extreme heat sources. If the battery becomes unusually hot to the touch during disassembly or reassembly, immediately disconnect it and place it in a fire-safe area.

* Right Side Bottom Case
* Trackpad Mount
* Trackpad Acrylic Cover
* Screws
* Rubber Feet

#### Parts to Reuse from Toucan1 (Removed During Disassembly):

* Power Switch Mount & Acrylic Cover
* Battery

#### Tools Required:

* Screwdriver
* Scissors
* (Optional) Tweezers

### Step 1: Disassembling the Toucan1

1. Power Off: Locate the power switch on the side of the Toucan1 keyboard and ensure it is turned off before starting.
2. Remove Screws on the Top & Save Power Switch Mount: Using a screwdriver, carefully remove all the screws from the top of keyboard. As you take it apart, set the power switch mount aside in a safe place, as you will need it for the Toucan2 assembly.\

3. Remove Screws at the Back: Flip the keyboard over and remove the screws from the back of the case, including the ones holding the old circular trackpad mount in place.\

4. Disconnect Parts: Gently lift the components apart. Disconnect the battery cable and the ribbon cables connecting the old circular trackpad to the main board.\

   1. **If you own a Pre-soldered Toucan1**:&#x20;
      * Remove the 12-pin FPC <mark style="color:$danger;">**cable**</mark> from the main keyboard\

   2. **If you built the Toucan1 from the DIY Kit**:
      * Remove the 12-pin FPC Convertor <mark style="color:$danger;">**breakout board**</mark> by disconnecting the cable. \

      * <mark style="background-color:red;">⚠️ Warning:</mark>  <mark style="color:$danger;background-color:red;">**Do Not**</mark> <mark style="background-color:red;">desolder the 7-Pin cable from the main keyboard PCB. You will need to connect the 7-Pin cable to the 6-Pin FPC cable by using the Convertor breakout board in Step 2.</mark> <br>
5. Detach the PCB: Take the main PCB out of the old Toucan1 case. You can set aside the old case, the circular trackpad, and the 12-pin breakout board for v1, as they will no longer be used.

### Step 2: Assembling the Toucan2

1. Prepare the Trackpad Mount: Cut the provided blue trackpad tape to match the width of the new square trackpad mount. Apply the tape securely to the recessed area of the mount, but **leave the top layer of protective backing on for now.**\

2. Connect the Cables: Take the Toucan2 Convertor Breakout Board. \
   Connect the 6-pin FPC cable to one side, making sure the blue reinforcement tab is facing upward, and connect the 7-pin cable to the other.\
   ![](/files/q7sA6E97IFKHFz5YMmU2) ![](/files/mTvwulQwxsDDGfnC8Vkl)\ <mark style="background-color:red;">⚠️ Warning:</mark> <mark style="background-color:red;"></mark><mark style="background-color:red;">**If you built the Toucan1 from the DIY Kit,**</mark> <mark style="background-color:red;"></mark><mark style="background-color:red;">ensure you use the new Convertor board from the kit, which is compatible with the 6-pin FPC connector, rather than the old 12-pin FPC connector for Toucan1.</mark>

3. *(Note: If you built the Toucan1 from the DIY Kit where the 7-pin cable is already soldered directly to your board, you can skip this step and the next step. Just go* straight *to Step 5.)* \
   Attach to the PCB: Connect the other end of the 7-pin cable to the 7-pin connector located on the back of the Toucan PCB. \

4. Secure the Cable: Cut the black adhesive tape into three equal pieces. Use these pieces to tape down the 7-pin cable flat against the back of the PCB. Carefully route the wires flat and away from any screw holes so they do not get pinched or damaged when closing the case.\

5. Prepare the New Case: Verify that the new Toucan2 right-side bottom case has four clean holes for the screws. Insert the PCB into this new case by sliding it in at a slight angle.\

6. Install the Battery: Cut a piece of double-sided tape to fit the back of your battery. Secure the battery inside the Toucan2 case. \ <mark style="background-color:red;">⚠️ Important: Ensure that the breakout board and the battery sit flat side-by-side and do not overlap, as this will prevent the case from closing properly.</mark>\

7. Reconnect Power: Plug the battery cable back into its port on the PCB.\

8. Mount the Trackpad:
   * Place the trackpad mount over the convertor breakout board area. \ <mark style="background-color:red;">⚠️ Tips: Do not place the breakout board under the outer edge of the trackpad mount. This ensures the trackpad will align with the bottom case wall during final assembly.</mark>\

   * Using tweezers, carefully unlock the FPC connector at the back of the Azoteq TPS43 trackpad by pulling it horizontally.\

   * Fully insert the 6-pin FPC cable into the trackpad's connector (again, ensuring the blue tab faces outward/upward), then push down the connector to lock the cable. Gently tug on the cable to verify the lock is engaged.\

   * Now, peel off the second layer of protective backing from the blue tape on the trackpad mount.\

   * Press the trackpad firmly onto the mount so it adheres securely.\

9. Install the Covers:
   * Peel the protective film off both sides of the new black acrylic cover.\

   * Place the acrylic cover directly on top of the trackpad mount, aligning the screw holes.\

   * Place the original Toucan1 switch mount over the acrylic cover. Insert and tighten the screws. <mark style="background-color:red;">⚠️ Warning: Do not over-tighten the screws, or you risk cracking the acrylic.</mark>\

10. Secure the Case: Flip the keyboard over and install the final screws into the back of the case. Once assembled, toggle the power switch back and forth to ensure it moves freely and isn't pinching.\

11. Apply the Custom Glass:
    * Inspect the custom-made glass overlay. \ <mark style="background-color:red;">⚠️ Warning: Ensure the matte side faces up. This is the textured side your finger will touch.</mark>\

* Hold the glass by its protective film tabs to avoid leaving fingerprints or trapping dust underneath.
* Make sure the glass is oriented correctly to match the trackpad shape. Attach it by placing one edge down at an angle, and slowly peeling off the protective film as you lay it flat to prevent air bubbles.\
